Job Responsibilities
Sorry, I still don't know what my "title" is. Will round it off to customer service(5-6hrs per day) import/export(2-3 hrs per week) purchasing(2-3 hrs per week), webmaster (just for maintenance now (3-4hrs per week) correcting other peoples errors 24/7! Updating several LISTS - customer, fax, phone, email, shipping etc..covering for other employees on top of my work - 8-9 weeks a year.
Job Requirements
classes etc does not apply. Workload where I am is heavy as it is a small manufacturing company - lots of different thing to do such as order entry, faxing order comfirmations, handling customer inquiries, inventory maintenance, purchasing, import/export, month end sales reports, customs documentations, web site maintenance, updating price list in Excel 1 time per year x 4 different copies, expediting / tracking shipments.
Uppers
A lot of variety, not too fussy about dress code as we mainly deal with customers over the phone and not in person. I get to watch other employees fart around, talk, take care of personal matters, personal phone calls, balancing personal cheque books, making personal greeting cards for relatives, playing free cell on the computer, surfing the internet, typing personal emails, stuff their faces at their desks etc when the Bosses are out of the office! When the bosses are in the office I get a glipse of the masters PRETENDING to be working or who have mastered the art of sucking up to the bosses come November just before the X-mas bonus arrives. I work with very productive people.
Downers
Tedious, work with people who are overpaid for being lazy & sloppy, careless and don't take initiative & who are scared to think for themselves or think at all for that matter. Spend a good part of my time correcting other peoples mistakes. I lose alot of time correcting their mistakes when I could be doing something more productive. Oh yes, having to put up with other employee perfumes and colognes that make you wanna throw up or sneeze your brains out. If there is more than 2 women in the office, beware of jelousy - its inevitable - guaranteed! Watch your back.
Lifestyle
Work hours 9-4:30 mon-fri. No business travel. 1 social event per year and that was cancelled as of this year (X-mas party). Requires plenty of patience and multitasking ability and have to learn other peoples jobs so you can cover for them when they are off and not get paid or compensated in anyway - not even a thank you for doing so!.
Compensation
I have been with this companty for 23 years as of Dec 2005. I started in 1982 @ $250./week $CAD. I now earn $800.00/week after 23 years. I get 1 bonus at Christmas which is about 2300 because I have been there so long & that is the Gross amount (before they nail you with taxes. We have no pension plan (small company, too cheap) but they give money to put into an RRSP or other retirement only type fund - depending on how long you have been with the company up to a max of $3000 per year. I only pay for disability insurance which is about 11.00 per week. If I became disabled, I would have to go on unemployment insurance for 16 weeks and if all goes well, ITheir group insurance plan is to laugh at so I'm on my husbands plan.
Advice to Jobseekers
Customer service mainly is boring & can be frustrating alot of the time..have to have alot of patience to put up with alot of crap from customers who never seem to be satisfied no matter how many times you bend over backwards for them. Be prepared to take crap for errors that are no fault of yours - ie: shipping dept. Not a very rewarding position. Companies are always looking for people to do this job because not many stick with it and it doesn't pay a whole lot. I find it hard to believe that some companies are asking for a college or university degree to do this type of work...its a no brainer job and that is what I work with - people who have no brains. It's a good position to start with to get experience working in an office environment but don't make a career out of it! Take my advice - if you can, find another position.
