Job Requirements
When I started in credit any college degree was considered a plus not a requirement. Today a BS in accounting or finance is required to enter this field. Courses in general business, marketing, accounting, business law and especially financial analysis are needed to be successful. With a degree the new graduate can move into an Analyst position and with 5-10 years experience can move to a management position.
Uppers
Solving problems that can save the customer and your company money is very satisfying. Seeing employees that your have trained and mentored advance is the most rewarding.
Downers
Lack of cooperation from employees of your own company - their failure to get the big picture. Rude and abusive customers.
Lifestyle
Work hours are ususally 50-50 hours per week Business travel varies - most companies try to limit it for this dept. but it is a very necessary part of doing the job right. Company solial everts are rare. Dress code is business casual - when traveling it should match the dress code of the customer you are visiting. Membership in a professional orgainzation if a big plus - either local of national.
Compensation
Base salary ranges in our company from $50,000 for the newer mangers to $75,000 for the Senior managers. The company had a bonus plan for serveral years that was based on a combination of dept performance and company performance but that was droped one year ago as they did not feel it generated any additional sales. Stock options are not offered. Standard company benifits of insurance, 401K, penision plan, are offered. In this area vacation policies are not as liberal as other parts of the country. Two weeks after one year and three weeks after eitht years 10 paid holidays per year
Advice to Jobseekers
I would advise newcomers that have the accounting or finance degrees to use this as a step toward other positions in the finance dept. With increased automation and consolidation of duties in the finance area this is a shrinking field. There will always be a need for the human judgment rquired in this job.
