Job Responsibilities
The last three years that I worked at Costco I was a full time refund cashier. I ran the customer service desk.My responsibilities were as follows: I was responsible for all refunds on merchandise.I had to make sure the product was ours, and that it was not stolen. We return any product that was bought at a Costco anywhere in the world. I have done many returns from the states, Australia, and the UK.With that comes research.I have to find the product.Computer knowledge is deffinately an asset. In some cases that is just not possible so a supervisor will authorize the return. The customer is always right. At Costco the saying is Give them the pickle. It is refuring to one of our training video's about customer service. I return merchandise with or without a reciept. This is also the department of sign ups for new members as well as membership renewal. Qualifiying and signing up new members was also part ot my responsebilities. We also accept different credit cards at Costco, so I was responsible for promoting these as well as sign up. Costco also has a coupon program where we send out booklets to our paying members,we also hand them out in the warehouse. As well as taking money from members for renewals it was also part of my job to phone members who had not paid up to get them to come in and renew with us.Of course keeping our work area clean and safe was everyones's responsibility. I opened the desk everymorning, so that means that I count in all the tills, and make sure everything is ready for when we open our doors. This is also the troble shooting dept. For Costco, that is not stressfull at all. Like I said the customer satisfaction is what really matters to Costco, so any complaints were handled without to much hassle. When you work for Costco they encourage you to cross train in other dept. so I also worked security there, and as a front end cashier, and as a marketer.Where ever you are in Costco you do have to be prepared to earn your wage. There is no denying it you will work hard at costco. They are very busy and always comming up with ways to bring in more members, which means you are even busier.A venture I took on myself was the Costco newspaper for our warhouse. Our manager wanted something to keep staff informed of new products and procedures as well as recognize who had recieved compliments from members. I interviewed lots of different staff members at our warehouse. Everyone loved it and it was a fun thing to do.I had another girl do the art work for it. We were encouraged to come up with ideas to help to keep everyone happy, even durring our busiest times. It really is a great place to work, and there are lots of opportunities for advancement if a person is willing to go for it.
Uppers
Being very busy makes the day go by faster. The variety of people that I dealt with. A friendly atmosphere to work in. The training that was provided for me. If a family emergency arose, I was never denied time off. It was a lot of fun.
Downers
Some people are hard to please no matter what. Some of the night shifts. Pushing carts.(especially in the winter) transfering product.
Lifestyle
The hours of this position vary with each cashier, in our store.I had seniority so I had day shifts, except for friday and saturday nights, then I had to close. I had sunday mondays off. This is because I was topped out at my wage and it is an extra 4.00 per hour to work on sundays, so most full time employees (except for salaried staff) have sundays off.As with any company it completely depends on who is on your social club wheter or not you do any functions. I was vice president of ours so I did alot of things with the staff. Paint ball, glow bowling,Zoo cruise,(boat on lake for day) christmas parties for adults and one for children, we also did some golfing. The dress code at Costco is simple. Jeans, and a clean shirt. No skin showing like belly buttons, keep the shirts conservative.
Compensation
23.00 per hour. Bonus twice a year based on time work Paid vacations starting at two weeks. what ever you put into your RSP they will match half. They pay for health care. Full benefits.
Advice to Jobseekers
This is a great job for some one who is a go getter. You must be prepared to do physical work and you must be prepared to learn new things. You must be available for shifts and be on time. This is a great place to work in any dept. and definately a growing company. Costco spells security and a future. They treat their people well.
