Job Requirements
there is a marketing need to learn new technologies constantly. To get a job you need experience, not just classes. Now certifications are what everyone wants. In the real world - my opinion - there is little correlation between certifications and the ability to get a job done. There is a need to teach how to learn a new language, the logics, and how to find ansers, not just try to teach memorized & tested piecemeal like I've found in most academic and online classes. Workload seems to have gone back to the work 55+ hours a week for 40 hours pay attitude, when you can get a job that is.
Uppers
I've enjoyed the travel, meeting and working with a wide variety of people and learning new technologies. I'm geeky enough that I get really excited when I accomplish something successfully and save a client time and money.
Downers
-It has gotten harder to find contract -the better and faster I do, the faster I have to look for another contract
Lifestyle
My advice for job seekers is that I'm totally discouraged. I enjoyed the constant change over the years, but now I'm paying for it because I don't have seniority any place. I'm telling younger consultants and tech pros - if they have a job keep it. I'd tell job seekers to try to specialize in a business analyst type of position with techie on the side or as a hobby.
Compensation
It's been going down steadily since 2002. I've gone from 6 figure incomes with full benefits from 1997 to 2002 to barely making 20,000 a year with no benefits.
