Job Responsibilities
I came upon this position by chance. In a past life I worked with an individual who was more or less an independent consultant. My responsibilities vary by client and have included financial planning and analysis and Sarbanes - Oxley work.
Job Requirements
Though only eight years removed, it is too distant for me to provide useful information about the program. Since graduating the school has revamped the program so much that any information that I could provide you of my two years in Ithaca would be of no use. That said, most of my education was geared to finance courses.
Uppers
I am an independent consultant. I more or less work when I want to work. It is not a career path I would choose but it buys me time while I look for what I really want to do.
Downers
Probably the worst part of this experience, I generally work by myself. It is also a bit limiting as many people want my services for those areas for which I have a proven track record. Occassionally, I can win the business on my charm and winning personality, but I also live in the Bay Area where people with my experience are a dime a dozen. On certain gigs an 80% match works, other times they are looking for just the 20%.
Lifestyle
I am fortunate I can pick and choose when I work. I get paid on an hourly rate and because I work in California, it means I typically work an hour day. For those not familiar with CA law, OT is calculated daily after 8 hours. 8 - 12 hours is 1.5x and over 12 is 2x. Companies like the flexibility of not having F/T staff but they detest the idea of paying dearly for the knowledge.
Compensation
The pay varies. Annual between $130k and $150. No options. Standard benefits. Haven't been doing it long enough to understand the bonus structure.
Advice to Jobseekers
If you want to take a break from the real world to just make some coin, no matter your field, I recommend get experience. People pay well when they are in a pinch and can use your services.
