Job Responsibilities
At Coles Express (Eureka Operations Pty Ltd.) Part of the Coles/Myer Group. You work mainly on your own unsupervised after training. The primary responsibilities as 2ic are a continuation of the former role as ??Console Operator?? (CSO) this position is demanding and can be rewarding by being alert to your customer??s requirements and who your customer is. Customers come in all shapes and sizes and not just bodily but mentally as well. In the few seconds you have with them you need to ascertain who they are, how they wish to be served, and whether they will be awkward or a joy. In this you have to adapt your own personality to suit all and handle all as well as doing your normal routines. These routines are shelf cleaning, seeing that stock is up to date and loaded onto the shelves correctly and that rotation of the same is in order by use by dates. Keeping the shop fronted up (everything forward to shelf edge and labels facing forward), as well as clean neat and tidy. Shifts vary from three to seven hours as a (CSO), as 2ic you are on an eight-hour day five days a week. The 2ic position requires you to work every weekend, unless you have a reasonable manager who is willing to split it with you. There is a cleaning roster at every site for each shift from morning, afternoon, evening and night shift, each shift has a an overlap time to allow all the duties to be full filled so there is no excuse if the requirements of your shift cannot be fulfilled. Bear in mind though that not all things work to plan all the time, so there are exceptions to the rule. Whilst operating the above you have a responsibility to the manager who allocates additional workloads in support of his/her role. This can be anything from filling and filing daily- required forms for health and safety, to overseeing stock requirements and personnel management. In the event of sickness by the manager, holidays or called away to meetings, you are required to take on his/her duties fully.
Job Requirements
Senior management organizes all training, and training quality. Further studies say of managerial status, or to gain a degree or diploma is subject to your own initiative, but recognized by the company.
Uppers
If you are a people person and enjoy the variety of people in your community and want to learn more about people, their habits, and their attitudes this is a very good learning situation to be in. It allows you to address people you would normally steer clear from and better understand them. It is positive for growth in a human respect aspect. The co-ordination you discover and the potential in yourself to overcome odds that ordinarily you could walk away from is an asset for anybody in self-discipline and spot decision making. A 2ic has a wider work range than a CSO or a manger and probably gets the more experince.
Downers
The role is very demanding on mental as well as physical strength and sometimes leaves you totally drained and disorientated at the end of the day, depending on problems that can arise. The hour??s can considered as not normal and normally fit in around the managers, for example he/she works from eight am to three pm. So your hours would be twelve midday to eight pm, which eats into both ends of the day. Though your time is flexible of a weekend having to work both Saturday and Sunday can have its pressures depending on who you are and family status.
Lifestyle
When it comes to the life style of the position, you have to bear in mind that this is a very large public company. Most outlets have very good teams and social events have been arranged between the various teams at their own instigation, such as Christmas parties since the take over by Coles. Once Coles have settled in there could be social events arranged later, as did the old company. Any travel needed by way of business is totally supplied by the company; all other travel to and from work is at your own expense and responsibility. Dress code is very specific comprising black trousers or skirt for women with dark tights, and black closed in shoes for all. The company with the company logo supplies all shirts, blouses, and jumpers. No alteration of this or exceptions are permissible other than of course by a doctor??s note or arrangement to suit a persons needs as arranged by senior management. Overall, though you start of casually employed and there are many learning curves and experiences along the way, it can be a very beneficial addition to your path in life not only for experience but also for you as a person and your interaction with others.
Compensation
As a casual employee, you will find your restricted to thirty five hours a week after training. This is not always immediate and you will have to work your way up to regular hours and will depend on your willingness to work, fulfill duties required and customer relations. Ths will also favour you for overtime which is available. This carries on into 21c positions, which become permanent with a forty-hour week and no overtime; four weeks paid leave and sickness entitlement on an accrued non-sick period. The writer is not privy to set or illustrate earnings and is the responsibility of the applicant to discuss this at interview stage with the interviewer or management..
Advice to Jobseekers
Visit different Service Station locations and talk with staff, get a first hand view of what goes on. Listen to what they say and ignore the negatives that will come out. Most people are very negative these days about certain issues or bits they do not like about a joband make it sound like the whole job, but remember they are working there and have not left. Do not think a CSO is ignoring you if he/she is serving at the time as the customer has a priority over you. Have a look around the various shops to see the standard expected of you, assess yourself for the role, and be honest with yourself. Many people try to use this as a jumping off position and that just does not work and can make life very frustrating for you and the dedicated employees and above all the management trying to maintain a permanency for all and as near as possible the requirements of the workers for various hours. Should you take on a role, once in it remember you have taken on a position of responsibility for the hours you are given. No one can avoid sickness but to whimsically not turn up, or phone in at the last minute, literally puts the whole logistics of staff into disarray, especially if you are not the only one doing it. The position requires a team dedication attitude for it all to work smoothly and create a happy environment.
