Job Responsibilities
3-4 Hours a day managing people reporting to me (pipeline status, deal closures etc), making calls to potential customers abt an hr., updating boss on progress with deals (30 mins), operational issues like agreementsc, deal structure discussions et( 3-4 hrs).
Job Requirements
Citigroup in India hires from the top 5-6 B-Schools in India and some from US. All new hires are put in a rotational Management Associate Program, which grooms for senior management roles. The program is a damp squib as once people get assigned to a unit, the unit heads rarely let the hires out of that unit. Normally hires would make an AVP in 5 -6yrs and a VP in 8-9 yrs. Although the workload in quite high while at work, people rarely work beyond 7:30 and most come in by 9:00.
Uppers
-Managing People-can be painful at times but genuinely feels nice to groom new comers -Diversity in products-Huge range requiring diverse skills -Time-get to spend quality time with wife and kid.
Downers
Politics- one of my worst put offs in a job is internal squabbling Travel-spend at least 7-8 days in a month tavelling. Although not much, I dont like spending nights in hotels!
Lifestyle
Dress code is strictly formal, sometimes suits (quite rare in India). Working hours are excellent as I wrap up mostly by 7:00. The company social events are dictated by the CEO or the unit head and can be quite a pain sometimes as the agenda is usually his!
Compensation
Rs 1200000 per annum or $ 25000. May not sound as much, but on PPP terms, it would be equal to about $90000. Bonuses are not too much-abt 3 months pay at the higher end. Almost no stock options.
Advice to Jobseekers
Commercial Banking in India is just at the begginning of a growth phase. The next 10 years will not only lead to more demand for professionals in this industry, it will get quite rewarding as well as there is a huge shortfall. +given the lifestyle, it is one of the best places to be in.
