Job Requirements
Trying to find a college course that would fit what I was
seaking was difficult since Facility Management as a profession
did not exist.
I found a program at Parsons School of Design which offered what
was called Environjmental Design which consisted of a triple
major of Architectural Design, Interior Design and Urban
Planning. In my solphmore year Parsons and The New School of
Social Research (now New School University) merged. I graduated
with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.
Classes were tough and the competition stiff.
Professors
Parsons - Top international award winning Designers whose
critiques were tough (like Simon on American Idol) but whose
guidance was pricless.
New School - Liberal and very Avant-Garde
Workload
Parsons - overwhelming at times
New School - challenging

Uppers
Having trusting relationships.
Meeting and working with the teams and clients.
If someone told me I'd be meeting and working with the CEO's and Sr. Executive
and VIP's of some of this nation's premier companies, I wouldn't have believed
it. Some of the highlights are meeting and working with, Lyndon and Ladybird
Johnson, Aristotelis Onasis, Richard Nixon and Ralph Lauren.
I enjoy putting and runing projects; always meeting or exceeding the goals and
finally seeing the pleased emotions of those who I've worked.

Downers
Paperwork.
Working with incompetent or un-motivative people.
Lame bosses.
Micro-management.
|
Lifestyle
Find a university which offers a top Facility Management
program. Cornell University, Ferris State University and
University of Michigan are a few. Minor in finance - this is a
key.
MBA's are becoming available and will help eventually in the
future.
Experience - Experience - Experience
There are so many pitfalls that cannot be taught.
Create loyal friendships, network, always leave some skepticism,
above all you are not going to go through this profession
without making mistakes, misjudgements or miscalculations. If
you learn from them it's called Experence.
THE FUTURE
The profession is going to get more technologically
challenging. Building more complex and the workforce will
change over time. High tech, big time, is on its way. There is
the possibility that similar to the medical field looking for
Facility Managers with a Nursing background, corporate
facilities might start looking for Facility Managers with IT
backgrounds.
Specialization will come as the field grows and new technology
infiltrates itself in to the profession.
