Job Requirements
I think I already answered this question before. Are you asking
about my graduate school, the University of South Dakota? Or
the school where I'm teaching now, Chinese Culture University.
As for USD, I had no trouble at all getting classes. I had no
trouble with the quality of classes. I had no trouble with
professors, although ONE was a too much of a gradgrind for my
taste.

Uppers
What can I say? I'm an assistant professor now! Hooray! Good schedule, good
pay, lots of speaking opportunities, and lots of respect --even moreso here in
Asia.
|
Downers
Chinese Culture University tries to load me down with too many
damned classes. They'd better cut that out or I'll walk. And
the Conversation classes are too damned big --how can anybody
teach English Conversation to 65+ students?
|
Lifestyle
As an assistant professor, I get lots of "say" when it's time to set my
schedule. Next semester, I'll only teach on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays.
Good campus with lots of trees and fresh air. Decent (but sometimes naughty)
students. Good pay. True academic environment.

Advice to Jobseekers
You want to be an English Professor? Are you kidding? If
you're serious, you'd better have a "gimmick." In other words,
you'll some really interesting area of expertise or
specialization. America is already flooded with Liberal Arts
majors. Or you can just do what I did: as soon as you finish
the degree, get the heck outta Dodge and GO EAST. Plenty of
opportunity here in Asia.
