Job Responsibilities
To maintain hardware and software on PC's. This encompasses everything from installing hardware to fixing software issues, installing software, doing updates, and generally maintaining PC's for a Library
Job Requirements
I would highly recommend any and all classes in the information systems area. This job does NOT require programming. I would also highly recommend getting certified in A+, and Microsoft specifically MCSE, and/or MCDST
Uppers
The best part is the personal satisfaction of being able to fix broken PC's. As well as being on the cutting edge of technology.
Downers
The downers are the possible long hours or 'off' hours that this job can require. As well as a higher stress level of keeping everything running smoothly.
Lifestyle
Work hours are negotiable and range from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, there may be 'off' hours where work needs to be done. Not too many holidays and weekends but the potential is there. There is no travel, dress code is casual, and there are a few social events a year.
Compensation
Compensation is currently around $47,000 a year. Since this is a government job there are no bonuses, or stock options but the benefits such as health care, retirement and vacation/sick days are really great. Pay increases fluctuate with the economy of the state.
Advice to Jobseekers
I think the job outlook is good. I would highly recommend certifications. I would also recommend becomming proficient in several areas of technology, i.e., Mac's and PC's or PC's and Webdesign, or PC's and Security, or Windows and Unix, etc. The more areas you have experience in the better opportunities you will find.
