Job Responsibilities
As a new member to the Booz Allen team just over a year ago, I've been through many different job responsibilities. Our client is DISA, Defense Information Systems Agency, part of the Department of Defense. Our team is currently working on programmatic support of government standard software. As I mentioned before, I have participated in numerous roles for the team. My first responsibility after joining the firm was to work on testing the software. I ran through test scripts and logged numerous software problem reports. I also helped monitor the software problems in our system, by opening and closing cases. I also participated to write new requirements for the next release of the software. At the same time as testing, I also worked on a special government project, to use the software and create a project for an exercise. I am now assisting with training material design and development with DISA for the software program. I meet with DISA and our developers to decide on content and readability of the training material. I have assisted in the teaching and administration of two classes. I have also conducted post-training analysis as a means to continually improve upon the quality of the training class and program as a whole.
Job Requirements
I am an entry level employee at Booz Allen, a Level 1 to be exact. To be a Level 1, a Bachelors Degree is required. Coming straight out of college with no work experience, almost all employees will become a Level 1. A masters degree will almost always start you out at a Level 2, and if you have some experience, even possibly a Level 3. There are a total of 6 Levels at the firm, 6th being partner.
Uppers
The best part of my job is my team. I work with very smart, enthusiastic people that make it a joy to come into the office each morning. I also feel that that my skills are utilized and that the work I do pertains to what I ask to do. I also enjoy the fact that we share an office, rather than a cubicle. The offices are very nicely maintained and each floor has two very nice conference rooms, complete with Plasma TV and cable television! When you sit anywhere for 8 hours a day, you want that place to be comfortable, and Booz Allen recognizes that. The firm also grants you an unlimited amount of sick days, this combined with flex work hours has given me the opportunity to save all of my vacation days for when I'm really on vacation. I have yet to use a single day of vacation and since it rolls over, I'm looking forward to a nice 3 week long vacation in Europe next year. (and I'll still have some vacation time left)
Downers
I do not feel that Booz Allen pays their employees their market value. I could jump ship and find a job that pays more, however the firm treats you well and the atmosphere is so nice that many people don't want to leave, regardless of the pay. Traffic in this area (Tysons Corner) is next to ridiculous. Getting here and leaving here every day can be a drag and really wear you down.
Lifestyle
Work hours are extremely flexible at Booz Allen Hamilton. We work on a flex hours schedule, meaning if you work overtime, that overtime can be applied to another day, so you can work 2 hours extra for 4 days and take the 5th day off. My last business trip was great, we have a great travel agency that took care of me well. I was even upgraded to first class for free! The business is very diverse and so are the people here at Booz Allen. I am very interested to find so many different nationalities, religions, and age groups here.
Compensation
I do not feel that Booz Allen pays their employees their market value. I could jump ship and find a job that pays more, however the firm treats you well and the atmosphere is so nice that many people don't want to leave, regardless of the pay. We do however, recieve a free 9-10% (depending on business) in our 401K plan each year. The catch is you need to wait 5 years to fully vest in this plan. Other than that there are no bonuses or stock options.
Advice to Jobseekers
Booz Allen is hiring like crazy! We expect to bring on almost a thousand new hires a year for the next 5 years! If you need a job and want to work for a great company and have a great name on your resume, apply online now! The people here are wonderful, we each share a real office (no cubicles), and job security is at an all time high. If you really want to have an opportunity to advance your career and take on new and challenging roles, Booz Allen Hamilton is the place for you.
