Job Responsibilities
I collect on past due accounts for retail purchases and credit cards. These are generally out of statute by 2-20 years. They are high balances. I perform skip tracing (find debtors that don't want to be found) I negotiate payments, settlements and process files for legal review.
Job Requirements
The hiring requirements are you have to be 18 or older. You are supposed to go through a training on the Federal Debt Collections Privacy Act. However at the office I currently work at, they don't seem to do that much. I am the only one who has passed the exam on this.
Uppers
I enjoy working from 6am to 2pm that gives me time to prepare an evening with my family, go to the gym, take time to attend classes or meet appointments.
Downers
The building is high security. And it is unconstituted. The management sees the collectors only as dollar signs and bonus in their pockets. We make close to minimum wage with the promise of a great bonus potentia, however none of us have ever seen a bonus more than $200.00. We were promised upwards of $1500.00. I have done some research on the collection agencies in Utah and have found the same to be true with most of them. There is an untrust toward management.
Lifestyle
We sit in a cubicle for 8 hours of the day. We are monitored by cameras. We are to be on the phones no less than 7 hours at all times. We are required to dress buisness casual even though we aren't seen by anyone but our peers. The hours as previously mentioned are good. Usually 6:00am to 2:00pm. We have no social events, no christmas parties etc. It takes a certain kind of person to be a collector. You have monthly goals to meet, if not you usually are given a warning of loosing your job there.
Compensation
Close to minimum wage, maybe some bonus potential. But beware of the misguided promises. Get it in writing!
Advice to Jobseekers
I believe the market is very good considering the debt and poverty in the world. It is very difficult to hear on a daily basis the stories of most people in America, how the lives are affected and forced into bankruptcy.
