Job Requirements
-A business background helps and makes you more marketable, but
most consulting firms, BearingPoint included, provide plenty of
on-the-job training.
|
Uppers
In general, consulting is an extremely challenging field, because the assignment
is always new, the client only hires consultants when there are issues, and you
are working with the most senior people in the organization. Also, for the most
part the people you work with are pretty sharp.
|
Downers
BearingPoint has serious HR management issues. The best people
at all ranks in the company seem to be leaving everyday. I
believe this is a result of the previous leader Rand Blazer, not
knowing how to reward or incentivize employees, as well as not
creating an environment that supports employees rather than
using them. Whether the new leader will be able to change this
culture which was established years ago when the company went
public is unknown, but from my perspective highly doubtful. The
only groups operating effectively is the government sector and a
few Manging Directors who shiled themselves from the rest of the
organization.

Lifestyle
It's like any of the major consulting companies, where the lifestyle is going to
suffer. However, other firms are much more effective in implementing to improve
the work life balance. BearingPoint talk about improving this balance, but there
is very little monitoring of MDs who require 100% travel. Furthermore, there is
no effective channel to report MDs who treat employees poorly. BearingPoint
rewards and promotes leaers based on revenue, not how they lead consultants or
the value they deliver to clients.
|
Compensation
At BearingPoint bonuses have been either minimal or non-existent
recently. Salary increases have been minor. The stock hasn't
been performing so options are essentially worthless. A Manager
could make approximately between $85K - $125K.

Advice to Jobseekers
Consutling is great field, with tons of challenges and great
exposure. Be very inquisitive about who your partner or MD is
going to be. Make sure that this is a person for whom you want
to work and who has a team that appreciates him or her.
