Job Responsibilities
Education of nursing staff, patients, and public in oncology
nursing. I teach chemotherapy classes and other oncology related
classes. I do charting audits to see if staff are documenting
correctly and give them feedback when I find problem areas. I
follow patients who are getting chemotherapy and who are admitted
with pain and other symptom management problems. I help with new
staff orientation and annual staff competencies in oncology. I
administer chemotherapy on the off services. Committee work and
quality improvements in area of oncology. And always other
duties as needed.

Job Requirements
Most colleges with schools of nursing have career tracks for the
advanced practice nurse. Classes taken depend on specialty of
nursing you are focusing. Need a MSN, preferablly in the area
you are specializing in. You need to be certified in your
specialty or med-surg if your specialty does not have a
certification. You need to be licensed in MO at least by the
state as a CNS.

Autonomy. Ability to have a variety in the job daily. Still able to have
patient contact. Teaching new nurses about oncology/chemotherapy. Working with
staff to improve care on our division.

Lifestyle
Travel to professional seminars to keep self current in field 2-3 times a year.
Work around 45 hours each week. Dress code is street clothes with a lab coat.

Compensation
Salaried position. Base pay $29.00/ hour plus benefits. Bonus
for patient satisfaction. Annuity plan, retirement plan, dental

Advice to Jobseekers
At one point in health care the CNS seemed to be dying out.
Right now there is a resurgance in it as the trainer of new staff
and clinical expert on a divisional level at least at our
institution, so it is a growth field.
