Job Responsibilities
Opening and closing a 3 million dollar store, day to day functions such as planning, hiring, creating schedules. Worked alongside 3 other managers to keep store running and earning. Sales drove to create outside sales markets. Teamed up with local schools, programs, and prominent community members to create buzz in store. Responsible for team of 25 people.
Job Requirements
I earned my undergraduate from the University of Florida. I was an English major with a business concentration. Though hesitant to accept me because I didn't follow the exact undergrad business program most had, I offered up something different that program wanted. As a manager I planned to either own/run my own company, or run someone else's for awhile. The business aspect helped this, and this program will continue to help with that as it outlines different aspects of business that are important to work.
Uppers
Working with people that I enjoyed was always good. The work ennironment was excellent, and Barnes & Noble is a company that is constantly evoloving and finding new ways to explan business. This constant change and rapid movement helped to make the job more challenging, which produced a better worker in me.
Downers
In retail, people are not always nice. They feel that yelling to get their point across will get them something for free. For every customer you love, there is one you dislike.
Lifestyle
I was a full time student as well as full time manager, so flexibility is a big factor in this. I was reponsibile for opening the store 3-4 times a week (which meant 7am) and closing (which meant 10 or 11pm) depending upon the day. You would travel if there were business meetings or outside events that you were expected to be present for. The dress code was business casual, and strictly adhered to. Mainly, it was important to be who you were, with a strong work ethic, and the desire to evolve.
Compensation
I was given a base salary of $25,000 a year with full benefits. In every March we were evaluated and given a 3-5% raise dependent upon our store status and ourselves. General managers are given bonuses, which in turn sometimes came back to you.
Advice to Jobseekers
This is an incredible job. Retail management is a good way to meet many different people, and in turn learn many different management styles. This is a perfect job for anyone who wants to learn how things run, while still enjoying oneself.
