I go to a meeting once a day for 30 min at least going over event orders for the following days. I monitor equipment and rent when necessary. Purchase needed supplies. Also do all the decorating at christmas time for the entire hotel. Responsible for all banquet liquor and bars. Doing consumptions, issuing banks, reconciling at the end of the night. Work closely with contacts to ensure complete satisfaction. Analyse guest surveys and handle any issues that arise. Check and make sure all the checks were posted correctly and fix any that were not.
Job Requirements
I only have a high school diploma.
Uppers
Always changing. Very challenging and rewarding when the function goes smooth. Get to meet lots of different people and be involved in lots of different events. Seldom bored. Able to be creative and learn how to solve problems quickly and under stress.
Downers
Very long hours. Lots of manual labor. Expecially for a manager. Very hands on job. Stress. Stress. Stress. On your feet the majority of the day. Must be able to multi-task. Get yelled at by upset guests when it's really not your fault.
Lifestyle
If you want a job where you will be challenged almost daily - this is for you. Just be able to think quick and make choices on the fly. Learn how to plan and organize. Learn Spanish. Good luck!
Compensation
I just got a raise to 30,000 a year. My salary is low for this position because I don't have that much experience and my employer isn't real fair. Most banquet managers also get a % of the gratuity which I do not. My last bonus was around $250 at christmas. They pay 4% of 20% of my salary into my 401k. My health insurance costs me $57 every two weeks. And I have a $100 deductible on prescritions and $20 copay. They take $2 out of my check for everyday I work to be able to eat there. And if I have to eat in the employee break room it's usually really bad. But if there is left over food from a banquet it's ok.
