Job Responsibilities
As a project engineer, I support the front end of our major
projects. Since the new projects coming through E&P in the GoM
cost billions of dollars, there is a lot of focus on engineering
excellence at the beginning of each project.
I spend a lot of time interfacing with contractors that do the
actually engineering. My role is to leverage my engineering
background to ensure the engineering is done appropriately.
This role includes a lot of time spent in meetings and on the
phone. Even though this is my primary job function I only spend
50-70% of my time on it.
Since I am in our development program (all engineers are), I
spend a lot of time in training classes, site visits, and other
learning opportunities. This accounts for 35-45 days a year.
I spend the rest of time networking, recruiting, and doing quick
projects.

Job Requirements
Not sure if this question applies.
However, in my training program most of the classes are focused
on application, not theory. There is a lot of case studies and
on site learning opportunities.

Uppers
The development program is awesome. I have a lot of leeway to take the classes
I want. For example, I am a engineer, but I can take Negotiations, commerical,
and other unrelated classes.
The work environment is great. Social, easy-going, flexible hours (I get every
other friday off, and the Fridays I do work, I rarely work the whole day).
Mentors - there is a huge focus on development. I have several mentors,
informal and formal, who are very senior in the company (Bands, D,E &F ).

Downers
None - seriously. Perhaps I am young and naive, but I love what
I am doing.

Lifestyle
Travel - I used to travel to New Orleans and SE Louisana several time a month.
I travelled to London my first year for 2 weeks. I also had an opportunity to
travel to Eypgt, for class. In my second year, I will be travelling to London
again in June.
Work hours - 9/80, which turns into get the job done. Meaning I might work
45-50 hours one week. However, later when the work slows I will leave early, so
I might work 35 hours.
The social events are great ranging from away days, happy hours, tubing trips
down the river, Young Professionals organization, etc.
The dress code is very lax. While it is business casual, you will have people
who wear khakis and a polo - to people who wear slacks and a button up. Jeans
will show up time to time.
Diversity has gotten a big push, but it is not the race agenda that occurs at
other companies. It is more focused on diveristy of thought. I am a white male,
and I have found no problems with our Diversity & Inclusion push.

Compensation
I get paid very well. I expect a rather large raise and bonus
in a few months, which will make me paid even better.

Advice to Jobseekers
The outlook is great! All of the energy companies need people.
Even though the oil price is high, it is not effecting how we do
business.
