Job Responsibilities
I currently work for a family law practice in Garden City New York. My firm consists of 3 associates and two partners. One of the associates is part time, working four (4) days a week. My daily responsibilities include daily client interactions, drafting necessary motions, order to show causes, TRO's, etc. This practice is solely matrimonials. We managed over 200 cases at a time. It is a high volume practice. Each day, I generally arrive at work at 8am and stay until at least 7:30pm. Very long hours in my opinion and definitely high stress. It is difficult to assign hours to each responsibility. However, I generally bill between 6-8 hours a day.
Job Requirements
University of Michigan, B.S. Psychology 1994-1998 Tulane Law School 1998-2001: I found Tulane to be a great education. 1st year was def. the hardest. It got easier as time went on. My favorite professors were Profesor Strickler who taught Civil Procedure and Evidence and Profesor Overby who taught Real Estate. The work load is def. manageable.
Uppers
The work in matrimonials is def. interesting. It is real and easy to relate to. Client desperatively need your help which makes me feel useful.
Downers
hours hours hours... no life during the week. I am at work 12 hours a day most days.
Lifestyle
Weekends are generally open for me and I take this time to chill and finally RELAX and re-charge.
Compensation
70K at my current place. I took a pay cut from NYC where I was making 125K. I wanted more hands on experience. Whether or not I made the right choice is still uncertain...
Advice to Jobseekers
DO NOT FOCUS ON THE MONEY ASPECT IN THE BEGINNING UNLESS YOU HAVE ENORMOUS LOANS THAT MUST BE PAID OFF IMMEDIATELY. EXPERIENCE IS MORE IMPORTANT IN THE BEGINNING BECAUSE BEING A YOUNG LAWYER IS TOUGH ENOUGH.
