Job Requirements
People are hired specific to the job, ie I was a sales person for 5 years with a very strong track record before being employed by Ardito. Our Technician I think has a computing degree, but I believe had no experience before joining us. Career path is limited at present by the company being small. However there may be options in the future as the company grows, if the salesforce grows then there may become a position for a sales and marketing director. There are also discussions about becoming a shareholder in the company.
Uppers
The sense of achievement when you win business. Meeting different people. Getting to find out what lots of different companies do. In the past as a salesperson I've been shown around a jet engine factory and know colleagues who've been around chocolate factories, car plants etc. It can be quite interested to find out what people do and how.
Downers
Losing a contract, there's nothing worse than putting heaps of effort in to find the companies budget's been with drawn or something. Prospecting can be hard when you have a day where you feel no-ones interested or you can't get hold of anyone, or everyone seems to be fobbing you off.
Lifestyle
Lifestyle is the main reason I do this job, it is very flexible as I work on commission only which makes me my own boss to a certain extent. I work from home and just go to the office once or twice a week to check in and do meetings etc. Business travel is all paid for by the company, contractually I work from home, so whenever I leave home for business I charge for travel as soon as I leave the house. We don't have a large staff and live quite far away from each other so social events are very rare. The dress code is very relaxed, however if I'm meeting a client I wear a suit but that's through my own choice. It is a very hard job at first because in sales you need to build your own pipeline and on commission only this means you get paid nothing until you get your first deal. However if you are a good salesperson once you have built up a good client base then you can earn a good to excellent wage depending on how much effort you choose to put in. I could work 60 hours a week and maybe earn double the amount, but I choose to have a more relaxed life these days.
Compensation
Commission 12.5% of all my sales. Bonuses from $500 to $3000 per month depending on the amount of business brought in. All business travel paid.
Advice to Jobseekers
You would need to know you were a good salesperson before committing to a commission only role, if you're no good you're not going to get paid anything. You need to have the discipline to get out of bed and work, working from home can often lead to people spending all day in bed or sitting in the garden. If you are a good salesperson it is one of the most secure jobs in the world. Where ever you go companies need good salespeople. You need to learn your products and services, no-one will buy from you if you can't tell them about what your selling, but be honest too, if you don't know something admit it, find out and get back to them. You can't sell if you are mistrusted or don't answer questions clearly. The most important thing is your personality, very few successful salespeople are shy and retiring. The outlook for the future is great for sales, more and more businesses are becoming sales driven, this means they are realising their sales force is one of if not the most important assett to the company, without sales no-one makes any money. Often because of this some great incentives are but in place. In the last few years ( not at Ardito yet) I have had numerous bonuses, umpteen bottles of champagne plus an exceptional holiday for me and my partner to South Africa, and a weekend break with my team.
