Job Requirements
BA in finance or equivalent work experience. Development plan is compilied annually (March of each year)to include internal training classes and external continuing education and personal growth of people skills within the company. Adherence to the plan and accomplishments are part of the annual review. The annual review is rated 1-5 (1=high) for meeting goals and leadership accomplishments. Success of career path is the sole responsibility of the employee and is highly dependent upon proper selection of a mentor (all meetings with mentor are on your time, not company sponsored) and requires a high degree of establishing a good network of contacts. The workload is intense and demanding, a minimum of 45+ per week is expected to meet minimum requirements of accomplishments. Approval of any internal training is dependent upon current management needs and not easily obtained.
Uppers
Innovation and dedication to the current direction of the company are encouraged and required to be successful. Personal strengths are utilized as needed and usually voluntary for extra participation.
Downers
Management changes quite frequently, which also causes change with the current directions required. If a project is not complete before a manager moves on, the project can be scraped at any moment, and all work and efforts are abandoned. This gets even more difficult when they decide to go back to an abandoned project, a year or two later, and the team has to pick up the pieces at a moments notice and make up for lost time and money. No extra credit is given for all the added responsibilities related to these business and management changes.
Lifestyle
Work hours vary with the current direction of the organizational goals, 45 is minimum, and can reach 60-70 hours per week. Business travel is only allocated to the seniors in the group and can require overseas locations. All travel is on the employees time, not considered as part of the work week. I have worked as much as 96 hours in one week, with 38 hours due to travel to India. Comp time is not authorized for these extra efforts. Social events are an annual Christmas lunch and presentation of the companies accomplishments. Dress code is business casual, and quite relaxed. Diversity is definite mandate, but only practiced in the U.S. U.S. employees are expected to respect the cultures of all other countries, but the other countries do not show respect for any U.S. cultures, we are viewed as having no unique culture.
Compensation
Compensation and benefits are competitive with other companies and adjusted on an annual basis. Cash and other bonuses are rewarded at the completion of each project or successful implementation of any changes. Depending on the current management these bonuses can be generous or non-existent. Stock options are available after one year of employment and the discretion of the employee, 1-16% of base pay. Up to 3% is matched by the company.
Advice to Jobseekers
Newcomers should be actively seeking new opportunities at all times. As your senority increases and salary increases your continued employment is at risk. 2-3 years in any one position or organization, that is not at management level, is the sign to seek other opportunities in the company. Lay-offs are a common factor, job knowledge and experience does not hold much weight. Younger and cheaper is the common factor.
