Job Responsibilities
I have been a Coordinator in Training, CIT, for 1 year and will be promoted to District Sales Coordinator, DSC Oct 1, 2006. As an associate my responsibilities have been to nominate new associates, service current Aflac accounts and find new accounts to add supplemental benefits to their employee benefit package. I have always approached my associate responsibilites as an educator. I educate the employer on how to they could help their employees help themselves in times of serious accident or injury, build loyalty to their organization, and possibly SAVE money in the process. I educate the employee on how great their employer is for offering a way for them to help their families in times of serious accident or illness, that they could do this for less than an hour's wage a week, and they don't have to remember every nuance of their coverage. AS long as they had my business card near, I was only a phone call away to help with any and all questions and claims. As a CIT, I had to balance my associate responsibilties while learning to recruit, train, and retain new associates. As a DSC, my primary function is to recruit, train, and retain new associates. I will still perform some of the duties of an associate, just enough to train them how to do the job properly.
Job Requirements
You must be licensed in your respective state to sell health/life insurance. There are always continuing education requirements to be met for that which are easily filled either in online venues or in your local community college. I, personally, only spent $50 total this past requirement period on my CE credits by bundling them all on the same online site. Secondly, I attended 12 training modules throughout the last year, one a month, that were sponsored by my Aflac State FL-N. Each module was a full day and focused on a different aspect of starting my business as a DSC. These were paid for by FL-N Aflac. There is ALWAYS unending field training, while writing business. I, personally, have a Master of Education degree, but it is NOT required by any stretch of the imagination. I will say that it has help make me personally sucessful, however. We have free training classes sponsored by HQ often, and Aflac has an Aflac University site for anytime online training.
Uppers
I am in total control of my work and my life! I quite teaching because I was spending more time with other people's kids than I was with my own. Not any more! I take vacation when my family wants to take it, I work at 4:30am when everyone is asleep if I want to do that. I am in total control of MY business.
Downers
The same as ALL other management positions in any company... dealing with the .05% of the population that will never be happy no matter what you do. I've learned not to let them affect my attitude or job performance. They'll be there no matter what...move on.
Lifestyle
The sky is the limit, literally. If you want to make 6 figures, you can. If you want to make a decent living and spend time with your family, you can. If you want to insure you'll have income in your retirement, you can, etc., etc., etc....
Compensation
I, of course, make commission, renewals, and stock on plans that I write myself. As a CIT, I have received a small override on plans that my trainees have written, in addition to my sales. As a DSC, my overrides will increase mostly because my team will increase in size, AND I will incur administrative costs in opening an office, conducting contests for my associates, and incur costs for some recruiting efforts, as all sales companies do.
Advice to Jobseekers
The sky is the limit, literally. If you want to make 6 figures, you can. If you want to make a decent living and spend time with your family, you can. If you want to insure you'll have income in your retirement, you can, etc., etc., etc....
