Job Responsibilities
As a Sales Representative at a Parts Department, I work 40 hours a week on a full time basis dealing with small engine parts. I work with technicians dealing with the repair of lawnmowers, riding mowers, generators, air compressors and a lot more small engine units. As their only woman in the department, I am responsible for the cleanliness and neatness of our store. I make sure all the large and small parts have their specified part numbers. I am responsible for the inventory of these little parts and take part in ordering them and re-stocking them in their proper bins. I always make sure the parts and units needed on the display have their tag numbers and all that. And also, working with guys sometimes makes me wanna cry because they could be as irresponsible as ever and parts are everywhere so I have to watch them every now and then to make sure that things inside my department are in order. That whenever we look for something, it could be as easy as ever. I am also responsible for screening all the calls for service repair on some appliances that we're selling and answering all customer's queries over the phone.
Job Requirements
When I started working at this department, honestly speaking, I don't know know a thing about small engines and its tiny parts, about hardware and how busy can it get to a hardware like these. As I work with my everyday routine, I started learning the basic things I need to know and what are the most common and sellable item in the store. I started getting at ease with the products that I'm selling because I'm starting to get familiar with what I'm dealing with. Few months after, I had to go through a Home Study Examination for Whirlpool Appliances, its parts and how to troubleshoot the problem. After months of asking and learning trhrough my co-workers as a certified technicians, I passed the Examination and is now a Certified Parts Representative for the Parts that we're carrying specifically on Products under Briggs and Stratton, Shindaiwa, Whirlpool, Lawnboy, Yardmachine, Muarray and a lot more.
Uppers
Location of my job is one of the things I like beause it's not so far from my home. Dealing with customers needs, sometimes technically is one thing that is really nice to know and I'm somehow on that stage right now. The Best part of my job that I'm really glad I'm into right now is being able to know things that I never knew before. The way this job is helping me expand my knowledge on different aspect of things and different experiences. Also, people that I work with are not the type wherein they come to work because they have to, but because they're also enjoying what they are doing and it's also fun being with them.
Downers
The worst part of my job would be customer's complaints. I've had a lot of experience with customer service in the past but nothing would really discourage me and upset me than cursing me over the phone saying I don't really know what I was doing. I tried explaining that as a parts representative, I am responsible for selling the parts but technical wise, I don't know much about repairing engines because I am not a technician. Well, he got more pissed when the price of the item went up and so upset it made me that i went to the lunchroom just to let it out and handed the customer to one of my technicians. Situations like these, no one can really avoid but having the right customer service will do it all. I know it kinda got into my nerves and I was so weak with it, but I know this is what I gotta learn more.
Lifestyle
For all the jobseekers considering a job as a technician or just being a regular sales representative at a hardware store, all you need to carry with you always is self-esteem. It's knowing that you can do it and determination to do certain things should always be on top. Because for some reasons, not all beginners like me had all the knowledge with my current job but because of the patience and self-esteem I've had along with me, I was able to make it til this point. And not just for this specific job that I am currently in, also for other entry level position that you would like to get yourself into, whatever you do, always think positive and always give customers a smile, it is one important thing that people always look for.
Compensation
I am getting paid for this job 7.50 per hour which is not that bad for a minimum of 5.25 here in Guam. I got a pay raise few months ago and I was really happy with the outcome. We got a holiday bonus which depends on how long an employee has been in this company and pretty much, I got a $250.00 which is not really bad for a one yr employee. The company offers medical, dental and life insurance. They are also affiliated or I should say own a car insurance company so we get to get discounts for this matter. We get a 20% off on some parts and a special half price for appliances, units and household items being sold by our company.
