Job Responsibilities
Lead a two-technician team of database administrators. This is the current client engagement. In general, work in technical projects (database related) for clients, with project leader responsabilities.
Job Requirements
Hires with a high degree enter at the programmer/junior tech level. With high school, at the computer operator level. The career path allows everyone to reach the top. Promotions are lenghtier in outsourcing projects than on technical consulting.
Uppers
The best, when compared with other consulting firms in Spain, is job security: all accenture divisions, even Coritel and BPM (outsourcing), tried to avoid lay-offs in bad times. Working for different clients, there are many opportunities to find a better job.
Downers
Stressing career path. Although BPM (the outsourcing division) doesn't have strictly the "up or out" policy, common in consulting, personnel are still evaluated once a year or more often, and are continously monitored for performance. Forget unions. Anyone making claims in unions style won't be granted good promotions.
Lifestyle
Lifestyle is one of the hardest points. Business suit is mandatory for everybody. Overtime is expected once a minimal requirement arises. Travel varies from project to project, and can be a serious point. Some projects may require weekly flights. At least, hotels are good; usually, four or three-star hotels are chosen. Holidays, on the other hand, are good. By working 43 hours on regular weeks, employees are given four extra holidays on Christmas, four on Easter and the regular Spanish full month on summer. On average, this accounts for as many hours as a standard job with 40-hour weeks with one month vacation.
Compensation
Most of the compensation is the base salary. Overtime is usually paid as a bonus, and usually not much; it's project-dependent. Other benefits are: medical care, life insurance policy and 5- euro restaurant tickets. Optional enrollment in stock purchase plans, with a 15% discount.
Advice to Jobseekers
Don't think as a blue-collar: employees are expected to work hard, complain little and not talk about unions or labour rights. In exchange, company will saw them as professionals and not just manpower; it will avoid lay-offs even in the thoughest years and will care of everyone's career. The ambitiouos and efficient are granted access to the top, but at a steady pace. Nobody is given a shortcut to a level higher than the next.
