consideration.

Downers
Being removed from the revenue stream--we are a cost to our
direct customers. The repeitive nature of my of the tasks
involved in IT work can be boring. Having to be on call at odd
hours of the night. Having expectations of working nights and
weekends can be tiresome.

Lifestyle
My particular position does not require travel. I have had to move primary
office locations every two or so years, but mostly I work 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM
Monday through Friday. I work in a cubicle environment in a pleasant corporate
atmosphere. I have a laptop computer, internal connectivity, access to office
supplies and work amenities (restroom, food sources, good parking, secure work
environment, etc.)

Compensation
I started out making $20K 20 years ago. I now make around $85K
per year. I receive between $1K to $5K a year in bonuses. I
receive competitive medical and dental benefits. I receive 50%
matching on 6% of my income. I participate in a 15% discounted
employee stock purchasing plan. I am eligible for a pension
which is expected to pay out around $800 a month when I retire.

Advice to Jobseekers
Network at users groups. Keep in touch with alumni
organizations. Take professional training when offered. Be
willing to travel on job assignments. Do NOT get into debt so
that you are forced to make quick job choices and take jobs that
are mostly attractive for the immediate future. Find out from
your current position where there is the most need. If you can
fill that need, consider what role you can play to help your
organization succeed.
