Job Responsibilities
I was a Teacher at Al Ansar International School In Sharjah/Dubai in The United Arabs Emirates. Special Teacher I was working 5 days a week fromm monday to wednesday ,and I was teaching the following grades: 4 to 12. I was French teacher and Sport teacher during the first year, then after french language has been cancelled from the school, I became teacher of the Holy Quran in Al Ansar school; I am French, and I learned Arabic in one year. I was already talking english; I got to teach in english. I was in charge of the non arabic speakers, coming from US, Cananda, France, Australia... Actually, My student were coming from every part of the world I was also in charge for purchasing all the furnitures of the boy section, and supplying males teachers in pen, board markers...
Job Requirements
My first Duty was to teach the student French Langugage, From the beginning tro a correct level of speaking, not easy in aforeign country. My second duty was to teach The Holy Quran to the boys from Grade 4 to Grade12. The Aim Of the School was tom make them love the Holy Quran, and the teaching of Islam. I was not held by exams, but I use to give the student an objective appreciation each month, then I can request to see the parents, actually, I was an educator, understanding the student, Making them love what they do and believe in it. I use to understand and also help them to deal with their problems if we couldn' t find a way to resolve them. I use to prepare my lesson per advance, beginning of the year for the core curriculum, And each week for my weekly plan. My classes were small classes ( from 7 to 14 students); that enabled me to take care of each of them and to understand everyone. About workload, it was very interesting as I love my subject, so I use to study all the afternoon on my next weekly plan, trying to find how I can make the lesson attractive.
Uppers
The grater part of my job was that I could be in relation with student coming from US, Cananda, France, Australia... Actually, My student were coming from every part of the world, and I have been very close to all my student, and I loved them really as if they were all my sons. For example, I have learned spanish in france(I am French), but after 14 years without speaking, I forgot ;I could understand, but impossible foe me to speak, but guess what, 1 boy came from spain, and he coulod not speak arabic, and had only a few vocabulary in English! So te Vice Principal came to me and asked me:"Can you speak with him and his parents?" I said: I will try; after that, I was personally in charge of that boy : Nour ( That mens LIGHT in arabic). A very strong relation was born between us, after two months, his brother registered in the school' then his two cousins! I was in charge of the Four fantastics now, and learning Espanol(Spanish) with them, while I was teaching them the Holy Quran and a little bit of Arabic...
Downers
What was bad in the job: The only thing I found sad is that you try your best to give the children a good education, but sometimes, you realise that the parents are against you, and don' t help you in your programm . Also, two times, when I' ve been involved in marking the students when I was Sport Teacher 2 years ago, 2 students were doing bad, so they got a 50 out of 100, immediatly after I got a visit of their parents prompting me to change the 50 to 90...I did not accept to do that...But administration did not have the same point of view... as they agree with the both parents. You know, sometimes it is difficult to let some money (it was a private school).
Lifestyle
I use to dress with the Qamis, a long dress from the shouders until the ankle. With a small hat on my head. I use to work from 7.30am to 2.15pm. Sometimes, we went to outside countries, like Oman for instance, travelling by bus, then by boat( great), then discover new places and new people, to educate yourself. The meeting parents / teachers is a greet experience too. Last but not least, you have almost 3months holidays evey years+ trips with the students, sport days ...
Compensation
My salary was not that high, about $900, witout bonus without increase after 3 years, except $15, and witout accomodation, but I did it because I love to teach children.
Advice to Jobseekers
For the job seekers: Think about that: Do you really love to work with students, can you understand them, what they need. Put in your mind that it will not be really like that you learn art school, but rather you will learn day after day about..... yourself! Know that you must be ready to speak with your students about things, they can' t say to their parents, but they will say it to you as they will trust you! Be able to manage that. That' s it, you will give them a lot of your time, and one day you will see that they are adult, and the best is that they will for sure afterward, become your teacher in another field. Thanks.
