Job Responsibilities
My responsibilities include: 1.) Configuration Management (CM) duties: Pushing code to production for on large enterprise servers. 2.)Requirements Manager: Manage requirements for large scale projects; keeping track of the contract and its changes. 3.) Operations Support (Tier 2) - Front end support for user problems. Once a problem is received, I notify the appropriate party to get it resolved whether it be the system architect, system engineer, programmers, etc.. 4.) Plenty of paperwork...
Job Requirements
1.)I was brought in with a college hire program that selected twenty-one out of one thousand applicants. 2.)Classes are offered through ECampus and have a wide selection which are paid by the company. 3.)Company promotes and pays for obtaining extended education such as a Bachelors,Masters, or PHD.
Uppers
1.)I love working with the best minds in the business and the technology is incredible. 2.)The job allows you to interact with people from all locations throughout the world. 3.)Quick growth potential is avaliable with the right group.
Downers
1.) Reports and paperwork - It seems Im a writer sometimes rather than a I.T. scientist. 2.) There is no physical aspect of the job besides punching keys. My bottom seems to have blended with the chair.
Lifestyle
The lifestyle is laid back. Flex-time is nice due to traffic congestion and depending on your project, most outerwear can be casual. Work hours typically start anywhere from 8-10 am with most projects requiring one to be there between the hours of 10 and 2 pm for meetings.
Compensation
Salary is average with the other major players in the area. Most start from 50K and up. If one uses the benefits for college, you can add up to an additional $7K a year for your degree. The company matches 66 2/3 for 401K and free money is always nice. Bonuses are given when the company does well (Usually in March). Since the government side of AT&T is seperate entity we do obtain an additional bonus when and if the company does well.
Advice to Jobseekers
The outlook is great for newbies in the field. I would strongly suggest that students obtain certifications such as A+, Cisco etc. Any insight into engineering or such courses is not necessary but is very helpful if you like hands on type work. If your looking for a TOP SECRET Clearance, learn all you can about networking and or programming (C#, VB, JAVA,) and technologies such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID).
