Job Requirements
I graduated high school in 1981. During my senior year I was a
co-op for IBM. When I graduated, they hired me as a secretary.
Worked in secretarial until 1985 when I took an administrative
job. Worked my up thru SNA network designing. Became part of a
joint venture between IBM and Sears for 2 years. Then IBM bought
us back and sold us to AT&T in 1999. So most of my education
has been on the job training and company provided classes.

Uppers
The best part of my job is that I am able to telecommute and work my schedule
around my son who is in Kindergarten.

Downers
The number of layoffs, trying to continue working with constant
layoffs. Having to pickup the workload of others who have been
let go. There is no more work/life balance. You are expected to
work whenever and for as long as needed to get the job done.
High pressure or you could be the next to be laid off.
|
Lifestyle
In my current position, I do not have to travel. I work from home so it is a
casual dress mode. The office is pretty much work casual - dockers and golf
shirts. Fridays is dress down with jeans. Work days are long. There are no
company social events.

Compensation
When we first became AT&T, the benefits were much greater. We
now pay a larger percentage of our health benefits. We have
skipped some salary increases. Bonuses are given in March and
they have been greatly reduced. My base salary (after 23 years
in the business) is 105K. Used to give us stock options, but
there worthless and don't do that anymore.

Advice to Jobseekers
I think the telcom industry as a whole is struggling but I
believe AT&T is one of the hardest hit and I think it will be a
miracle if the legacy telecom company exists within the next
couple of years.
