Uppers
-Space Planning and Facility Management are arenas of true Continuing Education. They are vital, fun fields where the challenge to stay on the cutting edge of materials, techniques, project management, etc. is both constant on on-going. -The people you work with, in implementing design projects, are usually highly skilled and very interesting. -The people you work for, your clients - are unique and fascinating. - Whatever your passion - economics, finance, sociology, psychology, environmental awareness - all are related to or have an impact on out "built" environments.
Downers
-Some design environments can be so strongly "production- oriented" that it can become little more than a drafting technician position. -People (clients and management) can be highly opinionated about environments and at times difficult to work with on a scale of resistant to totally closed minded.
Lifestyle
The variables are wonderfully diverse. You may need to wear steel toe boots and a hard hat to the job site or the most elegant thing you own for a gala ribbon cutting event. Other life style elements depend on the direction you chose to pursue with your design degree.
Compensation
These ranges vary depending on whether your employer is the Facility Department at a major corpporation, and architectural or engineering firm, a major furniture manufacturer, etc. Sources for this type of information include IIDA and IFMA.
Advice to Jobseekers
Consider professional designations and certifications to indicate you level of expertise and experience (IFMA, BOMA, NCIDQ, etc.) Be sure you're comfortable or at least conversant with CADD programs and skills. CADD opens lots of doors in this profession because it is a primary communication tool.
