Job Responsibilities
I order all of the merchandise for the departments that I am in charge of. Each day, you're supposed to order particular vendors. It generally takes me about 15-20 minutes to do the ordering, since I am so used to my departments by now that I know what I need or don't need, etc. I'm also in charge of putting the merchandise out once it arrives. The amount of time this takes depends on obviously, how much I ordered, and how much comes in at once. Sometimes several vendors arrive all on one day and it can take hours to put things away, what with taking time to help customers. Other days, very little merchandise comes in, so the day is generally spent pulling things from the stock room, or helping co-workers out in their area(s).
Uppers
There is always something to do, I am always kept busy. Even on days when there aren't any deliveries, or they are light, I can and do always find something to keep me busy. I can pretty much work at my own pace, as long as my areas are in order by the time I leave for the day, and as long as I've completed any tasks my manager may have assigned me. Even then, they are lenient about this, as long as they know you've tried your best to complete anything, but were unable to because of how busy the store was, or something to that effect.
Downers
At first, the job can be pretty overwhelming, especially when you're trying to acquaint yourself with the layout of the store and learning where everything is, combined with aiding customers in finding the products and answering questions about items you may not be familiar with. Plus, if you've never had a merchandising job before, it takes some time to get used to ordering and the ordering schedule, not to mention the different vendors and what merchandise belongs to which.
Lifestyle
Full time people generally work 9-5 or 7:30-3:30. You can pretty much leave when your shift is over and the night time crew arrives. Occasionally, you may have to work a little bit later, whether by choice or because you fell a little bit behind during the day that you need to stay an extra 10-15 mins to finish ordering or straightening your area. There isn't really any business travel, except for an occasional trip to another store in the chain to pick up merchandise or to drop some off, but that's pretty rare. Dress is casual as long as you look presentable and wear your smock and name tag.
Compensation
You get a slight raise after working there for 3 months, the amount of the raise being contingent upon the results of an evaluation you and your manager fill out. After that, raises are once a year, and are determined in the same manner.
Advice to Jobseekers
It's a good job, and a lot of nice people work there. It's also relatively easy, once you get the hang of it. The company has done very well and continues to do well.
