At Wyeth, there are many positives to comment on. I have worked at
other large pharma companies but prefer this company because of its
friendly environment where for the most part, team cooperation is truly
stressed (not just hoped for as printed in a company's mission statement
somewhere). The corporate culture here at Wyeth is unique in that this
particular site is the largest manufacturing site for our company--so
has a different "feel" than would one of our regular corporate sites
with non-manufacturing operations present.
Diversity is very much encouraged and promoted here at Wyeth. We have
special programs to encourage diversity candidates (and subsequent new
hires) into our company, along with special leadership/mentoring
programs. Many of our annual summer intern students are also diversity
employees.
Standard hours of operation for most offices here at our Pearl River, NY
site are from 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM but we do offer a summer hours program
for most departments (from the week before Memorial Day through Labor
Day). In this program, eligible department employees are able to work
an extra 45 minutes/day and then take off early in the afternoon of each
Friday each week. Overtime is generally not expected at lower
professional (exempt) levels though most mid to senior level
professionals might work until 5:00 or 5:30 PM several days/week.
Dress code is business casual here at our Pearl River, NY site though
with warmer temperatures, some employees take added liberty with this
program and push the limits to pretty casual dress.
Site ammenities include a company store with products sold at cost to
employees, medical office where free medical exams, o-t-c supplies are
provided, etc. There is an on-site credit union that provides decent
loan rates for cars, houses, etc. An on-site cafeteria serves both
breakfast and lunch/mid-afternoon snacks. Wyeth also has an
active "after-hours" activies group to organize baseball games, golf
leagues, running, mountain climbing, etc. In addition, there are
corporate discounts available to purchase Dell computers for home use,
GM & Chrysler cars for employee use, Vorizon cell phone service at a
discount, area museum free passes, discounted area attractions/movie
tickets, etc.
Wyeth promotes an employee referral program where employees who refer a
friend/family member/neighbor, etc.'s resume to us/if hired by Wyeth
would then receive a bonus of $1,500 (and quarterly programs are
featured such as a grand prize drawing with winner to receive two
tickets to a Broadway show of their choice, etc.).
Wyeth offers and actively promotes an internal bid job posting system
which encourages employees to review available job openings within the
company for transfer opportunities, growth promotions, etc.
Wyeth's benefits are above-average overall and in some ways are well-
above average. For employees eligible to receive stock options (exempt
employees with salaries of $37,500 or higher) at hire but also receive
this same number (or higher) of stock options thereafter on a bi-annual
basis.
Opportunities to receive salary increases are made several times
throughout the year via: mid-year salary increases, growth promotions,
overall dept or job category salary adjustments as determined by
Compensation in doing competitive salary surveys, Performance
Improvement Awards (given at the end of year--determined by an
individual employee's performance and in the overall company's
performance in meeting stated objectives), annual emloyee performance
reviews, individual "spot" awards that coworkers or management can
request for team members, etc.
Opportunities for advancement at this particular site are very good in
that Wyeth promotes cross-training and in working at such a large
facility (we have 3200 employees alone here), there is ample room to
find other work opportunities in other departments if someone wants a
change and has received an annual performance review of at
least "satisfactory" rating and has been in their current position for
at least one year.
Wyeth has a probation program (performance improvement plan) for
employees with performance issues--to give them the opportunity to turn
things around. In many ways, I believe that Wyeth might be a little too
generous in this area in that the culture here has long been one to
tolerate a lot before forcing an employee to shape up.
Overall, Wyeth offers competitive salaries but does not pay at the top
end of the overall pharma industry range. I am comfortable with my
salary in that I am much more satisfied overall here than at other
pharma companies where I was employed at higher salaries. (I am very
happy with my manager and department overall and this personally
motivates me much more than a higher salary would).
Another exceptional benefit that Wyeth offers is a very generous Tuition
Reimbursement program--covers 90% of all tuition, books, fees, etc. for
up to $10,000/year--much more generous overall than many other large
companies I'm familiar with. In addition, there is no one-year waiting
period to enroll like some companies have...
Currently Wyeth also offers another exceptional benefit--for employees
that work here for at least ten years, the company pays them a pension
upon retirement at age 55 or older but also covers them for free medical
coverage for the rest of their lives.
