The corporate culture at Wilson Sonsini is very much sink or swim. The
mentoring of the senior attorneys is in general quite poor. You must
bang on people's doors from day one to get in the good graces of those
who assign the work to get staffed on the good deals.
On the brighter side, this allows for some independence in the office.
As long as you are working on a project the hours are somewhat
flexible. Very few attorneys arrive at the office before 9:30... face
time isn't as big a deal as I've heard it is at other firms although
not many attorneys ever leave before 6:00 pm, even if they don't have
anything to do. When on a big deal it is typical to stay very late at
night and occasionally pull all-nights. Dress code is a wide mix.
Some attorneys wear fleeces almost every day. Others wear sports
jackets and ties most every day. My group isn't terribly diverse but
men are actually outnumbered by women which is probably unusual. The
opportunities for advancement are standard for most big law firms.
There is an automatic bump in pay for each year of being associate.
Partnership track is now presumed to be at least eight years but with
only six or seven partners being made each year recently (often just
one or two in corporate), partnership is seemingly an impossible goal.
