Actually I started working for Whirlpool after receiving my Master's in
1974. Whirlpool is a very solid corporation with high ethics and
integrity. As one of officers says, "There is no right way to do a
wrong thing." It is not a high tech glamor company. Let's face it,
major home appliances are not glamorous. However, everyone needs a
washer and dryer to clean clothes, a range, oven, cooktop or microwave
oven to prepare food, a refrigerator to keep and preserve food and a
dishwasher to clean dishes. Whirlpool has been aggressively looking for
new products and services to market. Whirlpoolers have a great deal of
pride in their corporation, its products and services. Check out
Consumer Reports to see what others think of our products. Employees
are very critical of the corporation wanting it to be better in what we
do. Many employyes don't know how really good the corporation is at
what they do.
Most of its US manufacturing locations are in smaller midwestern
communities. Corporate offices are located in St. Joseph and Benton
Harbor, MI, located across Lake Michigan from Chicago. People coming
from large metropolitan areas may have a difficult time adjusting to
small town mid-America. St. Joseph, MI and the other manufacturing
communities are great places to raise a family with good schools and
recreational opportunities. Most are within 60 miles of major metro
areas. St. Joe is just 90 from Chicago. Some singles have a bit of a
problem adjusting if they are looking for "wild night spots" etc. While
in the community you will always bump into work associates. My wife
jokingly says I could never have an affair in this community, too many
people know me!
One of the big things I have liked about Whirlpool are the opportunities
to transfer into different functions and gain new experiences. I
started out in HR and later moved into the service side of the business
and am now in New Business Development.
Whirlpool has a pretty diverse workforce and continues to promote
diversity. It just creates a rich work environment.
