The WHINSEC has a very laid-back, casual air to it. Except for those
days when we have VIPs visiting the Institute, dress code for civilian
employees is very casual. A lot of employees wear jeans on a regular
basis. Since the building is the oldest building on the installation,
its heating and cooling capabilities often leave a lot to be desired, so
there are many days when the women will wear capris and sleeveless tops
in order to be comfortable. The culture of the Institute is probably
its most appealing feature. Since we cater to teaching U.S. military
courses in Spanish, we have students from over 19 countries in the
Western Hemisphere attending. The majority of the staff is Hispanic,
with only approximately 10 percent of us being the minority "gringos."
The hours of operation for the civilian staff is very flexible. As long
as you put in your 8-hour day, most of the supervisors are very
accommodating in letting you pick your work hours. The most popular
work day is from 7:30 - 4:30, or 8:00 - 5:00. I personally prefer to go
in earlier at 6:30 AM and leave at 3:30 PM, provided nothing "hot" is
going on in my area. I usually end up putting in overtime hours by
staying an additional 1 to 2 hours, about 3 days per week. The
opportunies for advancement within the Institute are good, provided you
are bilingual. There are very few positions within the Institute that
are not bilingual in nature; fortunately, mine as Manpower Management
Analyst, is one of those. It's a great place to work; I would highly
recommend it to anyone wanting to enter Civil Service.
