Wells Fargo Bank is a huge enterprise. In order to keep everyone
productive, there is a culture of "micro-management." They do not
trust their employees to be productive without constant supervision.
There are multiple layers of management, all dedicated to making sure
the rank and file show up on time and are passably competent. This
means that the rank and file (bankers, tellers, etc) have multiple
managers to report to.
Opportunities for advancement are limited, unless you are in a location
where there is a "corporate" presence. Even so, managers are not
thrilled about their people getting promoted, because they have to hire
and train replacements. Moreover, you are really limited to the job
path you enter. In other words, if you are a Personal Banker, you must
become a PB 2, then a PB3, then a PB4. It's all the same job, with
marginally better pay and steeper sales quotas.
Hours are easy. You work the hours the bank is open, 9-5 or 8-4 or 8-
4:30. All the branches differ. But, in order to make your sales
goals, you might have to stay late to make some phone calls. But don't
expect your manager to be thrilled about paying you overtime. Its a
double-edged sword. You cannot get your job done unless you work
longer hours, but your manager won't want you to work longer hours.
Banking is very political. Your manager will be struggling to show his
manager that his job is not pointless, and your manager's manager will
be doing the same. Because all the layers of management are similarly
pointless is a sense of panic at all times.
