I was hired from out of state. I first had two phone conversations with the staff director. I then had a phone panel interview with several members of the senior staff, and several more conversations with the staff director. I was then flown at their expense for a final interview with a committee of 4 members. This part of the process is pro forma - seldom are people interviewed by members and not hired. Interview questions and conversations are designed to elicit whether the potential hire has the temperament to work in this environment. There is less of an emphasis on skills or subject matter depth, usually, though a strong premium is placed on the ability to write well.
