I was interviewed through two rounds over a month and a half before
receiving an offer. In the first round, the communications director, a
staff assistant coordinator and a policy advisor interviewed me in
Olympia. Their questions covered many of the usual background questions,
but I remember specific questions about dealing with competing
priorities. Part of the position involves working with at least six
separate legislators (handling many of their media, speechwriting and
press tasks), so several questions probed my experience with competing
priorities. The first round also included a timed writing test, in which
I had to compose a letter to the editor (200 words or less) on a given
topic.
In the second round of the interviews, I met with the communications
director again, the chief of staff, the head of policy and two
legislators. More questions dealt with my opinion on issues in the
state, and no doubt looked at my ability to articulate those issues. I
also remember specific questions on experience with diversity, writing
under pressure and dealing with difficult people (and saying "no" to
legislators and others in power). This round also had a timed writing
test, more conceptual than the first round's test. I was asked to devise
a 20-word media message from a fairly complex policy statement.
