Opportunities for advancement at the Wal-Mart Home Office,
Bentonville,AR:
1. Management positions require specific skills sets; therefore, the
selection process is highly selective. There is usually an abundance of
hourly clerical-type positions.
2. Management positions for M.B.A.s: Wal-Mart prefers M.B.A.'s from
high ranking schools, like Duke. An M.B.A. from Duke will get you into
the upper five digits and beyond. Comparatively, an M.B.A. from the
University of Arkansas doesn't go very far.
3. Employee Training: Wal-Mart provides a thorough employee training
program. As a new employee, you can expect to go through alot of
training to understand how the company's data bases work. Some of the
other classes available to employees are: Covey time management,
telephone skills, and the Dale Carnegie public speaking course. I took
the Covey class which was a day long course on time management and
prioritizing values. A free Covey planner came with the course. The
Wal-Mart employee training program is the best I've ever seen.
4. Diversity is stressed openly. Wal-Mart also seeks out employees who
are loyal, hardworking, and are passionate about their work.
5. Dress code: No Birkenstock sandals allowed. Business attire
required.
6. Home office work life: Cubicle city. The office building has very
few windows and the walls are painted a grayish blue color. The
cafeteria has very cheap, good food. I think a burger will run you
about 75 cents. The office hours vary. Hourly workers usually work 8
hour days, while management works 8-10 or more hours per day. The
company strives to communicate with the employees in regards to the
financial status of the company. Quarterly meeting are held to discuss
the results of the company's earnings and its future.
