Wal-Mart has a highly developed culture centered around service and
improvement. These core beliefs are very powerful and I had never
experienced any culture of this sort in any jobs prior to coming to Wal-
Mart. The 3 core beliefes are: respect for the individual, customer
service, and striving for excellence. It is a wonderful environment
for learning how to push yourself to achieve more than you thought you
were capable of. There also exists great opportunity for advancement
within the company. I know many individuals beginning in entry level
positions, moving into upper management within 5 years.
The downside of the postion lies in the fact that some managers are
much better than others with people skills and applying the company
culture. Situations where there supervisors have forgotten these
ideals create a very stressfull and negative environment. As a
salaried member of managemnet, expect to put in long hours and work
flexible shifts including overnights. Because of the nature of retail
and the volume involved, be prepared for no down time and finishing one
holiday, or season and immediately focusing on the next. Individuals
entering this environment should be prepared to work ALL holidays. It
is also highly recommended thatyou live close to the store for short
commutes on long days. Moving with the company is expected so be
prepared for transfer for lateral or upward advancement. Overall work
environment is very fast paced and also stressfull.
