For a data analyst, you must be able to think clearly and quickly. My
interviews were behavioral (eg-tell me a situation in which you had to
lead a team on a project, and what were the outcomes). Also, there were
some consultant-like questions (eg-you are given a situation and are
asked to come up with a resolution. Here, we are more concerned with
your methodology than the results (of course, if we ask you to estimate
how many hot dogs are eaten at Yankee Stadium, and you estimate that
there are 1.2 million people in Yankee Stadium at one time, that won't
hold over well either)).
The first round interview was an on-campus interview, with two people
who will drill you with these kinds of questions. I was asked three
case study questions, which were very standard (a vault.com book will
suffice).
The second round--the final round--was a day-long affair, which we
started at 8:30 am and ended at around 3 pm. I had 5 different
interviewers (with a 5 minute break in between), and each had a
different style, but most stuck to the case interviewing question. I
was asked about my resume during each 40 minute interview (for about 5
minutes), then I was asked either a case study, behavioral question, or,
in one case, I was asked a series of math questions. Again, we just
want to see how you react under pressure, if you can dissect and
analyze, and most importantly, synthesize and report the data in an
orderly and cohesive fashion.
I had lunch in the middle of the day with some of the first year
analysts, and that was a nice change of pace. They all were very nice,
and we could ask them the "real" questions (eg-the best bars, best
places to live, who is who on the floor, etc.). My day ended with the
HR person sending us off from the floor, with a little bag of First
Union goodies. I was then notified of my employment 3 days later. If
HR doesn't get back to you in 7 calendar days, call them back!
