I went through the merger between Wachovia and First Union. Things were
quite hectic here on the data side, with the merger and everything.
The people (data analysts and mid-level managers) are highly intelligent
and mostly very approachable and social. The dress code is business
casual (shirts must have a collar, so polo shirts are fine). This is
the main reason why I am staying at Wachovia--the people are what make
my division so pleasurable to stay.
First Union had more of an action-oriented culture, whereas the old
Wachovia was more into planning. Fortunately for me, the former took
precedence, and projects are abound. Due to the nature of my job, the
job security here is very, very secure. We have so many projects, so
little time, and so few resources that I can't imagine a single layoff
in my department here.
The opportunity for advancement here is standard. However, there are
two ways to be "promoted": one is by title, and one is by job. Title
advancements are based solely on performance. Do well, and you will be
rewarded as such. Although a title advancement does NOT mean a pay
increase, it does allow you to have extra days for time off, better
severance package, etc. A job advancement can only come about if the
position you are interested in opens up. Therefore, this will eliminate
the risk of having 20 mid-level managers and only 3 data analysts.
There tends to be a little "red-tape" when trying to get major things
done, however. Even though we support an "open-minded" policy,
everything should go through your direct manager, who has to go to his
or her direct manager, and so forth. With everyone's busy schedule,
sometimes you don't get heard, or get put on the backburner. However,
this seems to be normal at lots of corporations.
