Corporate Culture: Vivendi Universal Games (VUG) was formed via a
consolidation of different video games companies. It is also a division
of the second largest Entertainment company in the world, Vivendi
Universal (owner of Universal Movie Studios, Universal Music, etc.),
which is a French owned company. The culture at VUG is laid back and
reflects its roots of comming from smaller companies. You won't see a
lot of strict process here that you normally would expect in a large
company. VUG tends to be operations driven organization, which is
surprising considering all the marketing we do. Upper Management has
business operations and Finance backgrounds, and they are mostly French
and Belgian. It's difficult to get promoted to high levels at the
corporate office if you are not have some mentors who are from the main
company in France. You can get to high levels in the operations and R&D
departments though, they are dominated by American workers.
The culture of the R&D group is completely different from corporate.
R&D, who make and check for quality assurance of the games are very
ecletic and the office environment and dress code is very relaxed. No
matter how weird you dress in the R&D group, if you can crank out good
games which aren't full of bugs, you are golden.
Dress Code
The dress code is business casual for the corporate office and very
casual for the R&D and operations offices.
Hours
The corporate office hours are 8:30 am to 5:30pm,but R&D/QA work odd
hours to meet tight deadlines for getting games into production.
Diversity
The diversity is good at the rank and file level, but at the senior
managment and management level it is mostly white men. The exceptions
would be the Human Resources and Corporate Commmunication departments
which are 95% women and all of there senior managment and managers are
women. Individually groups seem to get along well. The cliques are
mostly based on which Department (ie Finance, Operations) you are in
instead of which racial or gender group you are in
