I hire people here and the process varies according to the person. But
typically, our HR department serves as a recruiter. They get the job
description from you, go on all the websites and occasionally run a NYT
ad. Then they screen candidates. It has worked fairly well. I also try
to hire minorities if I can, so I call black and Hispanic colleagues and
see people that they recommend. I have found that's the best way to
recruit minorities -- to tap into a network that wouldn't ordinarily
come your way. Anyway, you have a series of interviews and HR kind of
manages the process. They have been very good in handling the salary
negotiations, which I prefer because I don't want to have those
discussions with someone who is going to work for me. I guide the HR
person, of course, and together we decide how much we're willing to pay
for someone. The process has worked well for me.
I came in at the VP level and already know the person to whom I report.
I also met with the head HR person and it was he who negotiated my
salary and extended the offer.
