Job Title Workplace Survey
Web Content Administrator Looking back at my time with Vangaurd, I think this company has lot of 'little castle' within each business units. I started with them at an entry level job as a S6/S63 associate. Answering phone inquiries from 401K participants. My first year was a living hell for me and most of my peers from the training class. I left my job as an assistant manager at the local bank, well experienced with the finance products and investment tools. I was hoping to be treated for the hard work and value I was bringing to the company. I never met my supervisor during my 6 weeks training period. When I found out about my department and supervisor, I was told that might be changing sooon!!! During my first three months 'on the floor'my immediate management changed twice. As a 'part of training and coaching' all phone calls were recorded and you get a feedback from supervisors about your performance.Somehow the meetings were very formal and conversations was 'geared' towards my 'foreign accent' prounciations and style rather then subject matter and value service over the phone. I never felt so humiliated in my life. The suvp was 14 years experienced as supervisor ( may that should tell something!) She had no consideration for anyone other then light skin, light eyes. She promoted a 10 month experienced peer to a LEAD position without considering any of the experienced staff members. I was not looking to stay for long anyway. I was hanging in for the tuition benefit for going to IT program. Some folks were hoping to make a career in management there and were shocked at her practices. Her upper management was well aware, but always looked the other way. VG has a pacifier process called "skip level meeting" this is where you dig a deeper hole for yourself. You skip level and talk to your bosses boss about a situation hoping to get some help. But then you find yourself getting verbal warnings for silly things e.g Your break time was 17min instead of 15 min! doesn't matter that your last phone call was cutting in to your break. You logged in 2 min late three times this week! doesn't matter you stayed late 15 min each day just to finish up a call and log off....I have a BA degree in Economics and Masters in Marketing. I had extensive banking and management experience before joining VG...I had never been treated like this in any job and I personally never treated my employees like this anywhere. I got so fed up with the treatment, that I was about to quit!!!!! My year was almost over and I found a position in the IT area. I had made up mind that if I don't get this change, I was going to quit and try another company. Lucky for me, I got the transfer....it turned out to tbe TURNING POINT in my career. I had a very nice supervisor, Jennifer Saller. She reinstated my faith in vanguard. Going from business to IT was the refreshing change I needed. I was learning new functions and applying my IT class room knowledge to projects. I had no problem getting my classes approved and paid for. I also got lot of flexibility for taking evening classes and also some early morning classes in turn for making up my time at the peak project times. I worked very hard and got appreciation for it. Jen went on maternity leave shortly after I started and she left me in very good hands with her boss. He is a gem of a person and most respected manager in the VG IT..He was very aware of my skills and took time and interest in giving me right type of projects and balanced work load. I'm extreamly greatful to him for everything he has done for me. He wrote a very fair review without any tricks. This was not just for me, he treated everyone the same. I like the fact the RULES were the same for all. I had to leave my job with his group and move on to another position due to personal reasons. But to this day,I still miss working for him and I adore him. You can publish this note as you wish. I have nothing but good things to say about Vanguard. Like it says" All well if it ends well" I can tell you that working for business and working was IT was like a two seperate and opposite worlds.
