I joined the faculty in 1980. I was given a great amount of freedom in
choosing what courses I taught. I received great encouragement from my
two
senior colleagues, both foresters who had an interest in seeing my
discipline (geology) help make us an interdisclipinary department.
After seven years we hired a second geologist, then another forester
and a
geologist, so the department doubled in size from 3 to 6 faculty
members
in about ten years.
The administration was generally very supportive, especially
when
they saw that the department was attracting many students.
The biggest shifts are 1) the forestry, geology, and natural
resources majors have become mainstream, respected majors; 2) students
now
come to Sewanee wanting to major with us - we have lest "converting" to
do.
All of these changes could not have happened without strong
institutional support. The overall work ethic in the department was to
spend long hours building up and supporting our majors. This was not
coerced but was part of a great esprit de corps.
The usual opportunities for advancement were available, and all
of
our professors have moved up in rank at the expected intervals.
Overall I'm very satisfied by the flexibility and supportive
nature
of the academic culture here.
