This is an academic institution with a hospital attached. Its identity gets
confused and confusing, particularly on things like, the hospital employee health
plan covers smoking cessation aids while the University health plan doesn't --
although they appear to be the same plan. Well, who the heck understands health
plans anyway??
Employee morale -- on the whole good, I'd say, among the clerical staff,
who tend to be middle aged women working for secondary income and
college tuition for their kids. Women who are the sole provider in
lowly jobs are less satisfied with the compensation. The academic
medical staff do not seem happy in this particular division -- I hear
grumblings about a lack of leadership, coodination of research/clinical
efforts, political manoueverings, etc. My boss gets annoyed when it
takes his secretary all afternoon to secure relase of his funds for
things like dinner for a visiting professor and a few colleagues, etc.
He complains that he brings in millions in research money yet gets the
third degree to get a few hundred bucks for dinner for eight people.
Also, there have been new hires among the faculty which are not
universally welcomed, making for a less than optimal/collegial
atmosphere in our beautiful new award-winning building that is already
too small!!
