The School of Pharmacy and the University in general are run by an
administration who care little for the voices of experience, preferring
to hear from those who are to weak to resist the powers that be or
who are to know at the job to know better. Diversity is not sought,
but if it takes place in the hiring practices, it makes the
Administration look better. Most would agree that racism and agism
are rampant on this campus. Hours are flexible for faculty, but
rather strict (40 h/week is the norm, 8 - 5) for staff. Business attire
is not a requirement, but truly comfortable casual clothes or gym
wear would be unacceptable attire. Advancement is limited for staff
since the upper level staff members must retire or die to open up a
position. Nevertheless, the Dean of the School has managed to
create new titles to allow promotions and raises for his supportive
staff members. Those he doesn't care about might have the same
title and low raises for decades. Faculty members advance if and
when they please the Division Chair. Many examples of inequities
in promotions have been noted by the faculty. Professional
development is limited and usually the campus-level programs are
NOT designed by those who could benefit from such programs, but
rather by Administration-chosen faculty or staff. These program
directors apparently teach what they wish to teach and not what is
beneficial.
