Senior Lecturer Corporate culture: Corporate culture has changed over the past 24-18 months. Formerly a collegial climate in a semi-flat corporate culture which supported people who fit into the "Canterbury way" -- now a hierarchical competitive culture with many opportunities for some, but increased pressure (not productive) on short-term outputs. Restructuring will continue in the future, so there is an additional climate of fear and uncertainty in some areas. However, over all, the lecturing workload hours are somewhat less than in North American Universities, with a typical teaching load of about 7 hours per week, with about 4-7 hours per week preparation. Research and administration are about 50% of the work time. There are a number of sources of research funding which can be accessed with the support of the University's research office, which increase possibilities for advancement. In addition, the university is well-placed to assist staff in accessing paid consultancies, which can be used to establish separate accounts to support individual initiatives. Diversity: Very low employment rate for women (around 14%) and for minorities (around 3%) and people with disabilities (% not available, but very low), and poor advancement opportunities for women -- but a great place for white males. Hours: Typical academic environment. Average working hours for most, 60 hours per week, but very flexible and family friendly. 4 weeks holiday per year, plus time for research out of typical office hours. Teaching is usually accomplished between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm, but some courses are in the evenings and even, occasionally, on the weekend. Dress code: relaxed, varied. Some suits in the administration, but not typical in the lecturing academics. Opportunities for Advancement: Many opportunities -- each individual can apply for a promotion on a yearly basis. Can be very quick promotion if research publication rate is high.
