| Software Engineer/Programmer IV |
CORPORATE CULTURE: Similar to academe: individuas tend to be motivated by
curiosity rather than by personal advancement. Also, one tends to become
a jack-of-all-trades rather than a specialist. Considerable corporate
attention is given to the well-being of individuals (e.g., work
flexibility, child-care, fitness centers). On the Strength Deployment
Inventory, the corporate personality "color" is green-blue. There is
some competition between scientists and programmers -- primarily over
salaries.
DIVERSITY: Considerable, given the derth of non-white, male candidates.
The corporation has very active programs for interning and recruiting
non-white males. It has won national awards in this area.
HOURS: Generally, an employee such as myself can set their own hours
because the work is considered much more important than office hours. It
is also possible to telecommute part or all of the day. Because people
tend to be driven by curiosity and self-motivated, however, it is not
unusual to work more than forty hours per week.
DRESS CODE: Similar to academe. I, for example, work in the summer in a
tee-shirt, shorts, and sandals -- as has the coporate president.
ADVANCEMENT OPPORTUNITIES: There are four levels of software
engineer/programmer (my category). Advancement is fairly-well related to
expertise and productivity. One is evaluated and recommendations for
promotion are made once every year.
