After not working for 10 years I was offerd employment at the Naval
Hospital because of my background. I was the supervisor of Corporate
Purchasing at Charles Schwab & Co., Inc. Being a part-time employee
helps me continue taking care of my family. I miss the "Corporate
World" very much and hopefully I will be able to return. Working at the
Naval Hospital has been truly an experience. It seems everytime I start
a new job something happens. When I started at Schwab I got my feet wet
very fast because of Black Monday and continued with the bear and bull
markets for nine years. Now that I am at the hospital I feel so close
to the war that in many ways is exciting and painful. It sure has been
an experience.
I work for the Patiend Admin Department. I provide help and service
to patients who will be having future surgery. I provide them with
information regarding their surgery and guide each step. We make sure
all of the paperwork is in order for active dutie personnel. We
troubleshoot all of the problems that may arise prior to surgery and
make sure a chart is ready for the date. Any problems that may arise
should be transparent to the patient. I also have the pleasure of doing
Birth Certificate once a week. That is my easy day at work. I
interview moms and follow vital records procedures to create a Birth
Certificate and request a Social Security number for newborn babies. We
also assist in Declaration of Paternity for singles fathers, Deers
enrolment and any other question that new parents may have.
The work enviorment is nothing what I thought working close to the
military could be. It is very easy going but it is sure hard to change
any procedure. It is also so hard to get resources. I now realize how
spoil I was at Schwab. It is very disapointing not to be able to
advance because of your merits. First you must become GS. Hiring is as
follows: 1st- retired military 2nd-spouse of military 3rd- handicap
4th- transfer from other governmet jobs 5th new applicants (thatis me)
not forgeting minorities come before.
I continue to like my job and will enjoy as long as I am here. I do the
best I can because it is my nature. I am learning and will take this
knowledge to my next job. There is nothing more rewarding than to get a
Thank You letter from someone you helped three months ago. Or a Hi from
Iraq because you cared and took five more minutes to hear a young
soldier tell his or her story.
