The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Air Quality
Planning and Standards is a wonderful place to work for people who are
interested in national environmental policy and regulation, but dread
the Washington D.C. rat race. This is one of the few headquarters
level EPA offices that is located outside of the D.C. metro area, so
you get to work on key issues related to national environmental policy
and management, but in the more relaxed, friendly confines of central
North Carolina.
The work force consists of engineers, environmental scientists,
economists, and other disciplines. The office is located on a scenic
campus, with a lake, walking trails, fitness center, cafe, and a child
care center that is slated for construction in the near future. The
campus is easily accessible from Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill,
which offer a variety of desirable living environments and cultural
pursuits.
Hours are very flexible - you may work a regular 5 day/week 8-hour
schedule, varying your start times; or the "flex schedule where you
work an extra hour each day, and get an additional day off every two
weeks. Dress is business casual for the most part. As a Federal
agency, EPA does not discriminate due to race, sex, or sexual
preference. We actually have a number of women in management
positions, and minorities are gradually starting to move up the
managment ladder as well.
Opportunities for advancement are limited - people in management
positions tend to stay in them for a long time. But if you exhibit
leadership potential, and know how to impress the right people, you can
sometimes move up surprisingly fast.
